캐나다에서 IRCC 홈페이지를 통해서 학생비자(study permit)를 셀프 연장하는 방법입니다. 부양가족들의 신분인 Visitor record도 같이 연장할 수 있습니다. 학생비자 연장은 정확한 표현으로는 'Study permit extension'으로 study permit approval 이후 캐나다에서 거주하면서 스터디 퍼밋 기한 내 학생 신분을 유지하고 그 기간을 늘리는 것을 말합니다.
1. Canada Study permit 연장, 유학원을 통해서 해야 하나?
처음에 캐나다로 왔을 때는 어떻게 할지 모르고, 두렵기도 해서 유학원에 맡겨서 적법한 신분을 획득했는데요. 알고 보면 쉽게 셀프로 할 수 있는 것들이 많다고 생각이 들 거예요.
셀프 연장 시, 유학원에 지불해야 하는 금액이 만만치 않습니다. 제가 알아봤던 유학원들의 신청 비용입니다.
참고
- A 유학원: 1인당 250불, 4명일 경우, 1,000 불
- B 유학원: 1인당 200불, 4명일 경우, 700불
- C 유학원: 1인당 150불, 4명일 경우, 550불
금액은 천차만별입니다. 한 가지 아셔야 할 것은 서류 준비는 어차피 본인이 하셔야 하는데, 신청할 때 캐나다에서 요구하는 공식 문서가 있습니다. 이걸 쓰는 게 만만치 않습니다. 아무래도 이거 쓰는 비용일지도 모른다는 생각이 들었어요. 이 신청서들 쓰는데 너무 힘들었어요. :)
어쨌든, 유학원에 줄돈 우리 가족 맛있는 거 사 먹어야겠다고 하고, 셀프 연장을 했습니다.
부족하지만 제가 설명한 내용을 따라오신다면 무사히 학생비자 연장을 하실 수 있을 겁니다
아래처럼 Check Lists 생성을 위한 질문으로 답변이 완료되면, 이민국에서 요청하는 공식적인 Imm 문서를 작성해서 올려주셔야 연장 신청이 완료됩니다.
2. 학생비자, 셀프 연장은 이렇게 진행하세요.
Step 1) IRCC에 접속해서 신청할 account를 생성합니다. (이 방법은 생략할게요~)

Step2) IRCC > Start an application > Apply to come to Canada > Study permit을 클릭합니다.
Step 3) 이후, 수십 개의 Question을 통해 해당 신청자가 필요한 문서를 알려주는데요. eligiblity을 먼저 진행하게 됩니다.
Step 4) 질문에 대한 답변을 하시면 되는데, 몇 가지 주의할 사항이 있습니다.
아래 이미지처럼 질문들이 계속 나오고, 답변하는 결과에 따라 다른 질문으로 점프하거나, 스킵되기도 해서 다양하게 루트로 진행이 됩니다.
아래 질문 케이스는 이미 비자를 받은 적 있고, 캐나다에서 최소 6개월 이상 거주하고 있는 학생(보호자) + 동반자(보호자, 아이)의 케이스라고 말씀드립니다.
3. Study permit extension Queistionaires에 답변하기
학생(주신청자)을 위한 질문 사항이며, 공통적인 질문에 대한 답변은 아래와 같습니다.
모든 신청자들이 동일한 상황은 아니므로, 아래는 참고해주시기 바랍니다.
1. What would you like to do in Canada? - Study
2. How long are you planning to stay in Canada? - Temporarily - more than 6 months
3. Select the code that matches the one on your passport. - KOR (Korea, South)
4. What is your current country/territory of residence? If you are presently in Canada, you should select Canada. - Canada
5. Do you have a family member who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and is 18 years or older? - No
6. What is your date of birth? - xxxx.xx.xx
7. Are you a lawful permanent resident of the United States with a valid U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) number? - No
8. What is your current immigration status in Canada? - Student
9. What is your marital status? - Married
10. What is your province of destination? If visiting multiple provinces, select the one in which you will be spending most of your time. - British Columbia or 다른 주일 경우, 해당 거주 주 선택
11. Are you accompanying a family member who has status in Canada? - Yes
12. Do you also want to apply for a work permit? - No *Co-op work permit일 경우, 학교 프로그램에서 지원을 해야 하고, 관련 공식적인 문서도 필요합니다.
13. When does your status in Canada expire? - Date *처음 받았던 비자의 expired date를 기재합니다.
14. Have you had a medical exam performed by an IRCC authorized panel physician (doctor) within the last 12 months? - No * 이 부분이 가장 혼동이 올 수 있는데, 캐나다 온 지 6개월이 지났고, 이미 받은 적 있다면 No를 선택해야 합니다.
15. Have you lived in a designated country or territory for more than six months in the last year? - No * 이미 캐나다에서 6개월 이상 살고 있다면 No를 반드시 선택해야 합니다.
15번 이후, 동반자(가족 구성원)에 대한 질문이 시작됩니다. 2명이면 2번, 3명이면 같은 질문을 3번 반복하셔야 합니다.
1. Do you want to submit an application for a family member? - Yes
2. What is your family member`s current immigration status in Canada? - Apply to remain in Canada as a visitor
3. Does your family member want to restore their status in Canada? - No
4. Has your family member had a medical exam performed by an IRCC authorized panel physician (doctor) within the last 12 months? - No
5. Is your family member staying in Canada for more than 6 months AND has lived in one or more designated countries or territories for more than six months in the last year? - No
6. Your family member's stay starts on the day they entered Canada and ends on the day they want to leave Canada. - No
7. In the past 10 years, has your family member given their fingerprints and photo (biometrics) for an application to come to Canada? - No
8. 아이들의 경우, What is your family member's current marital status? - Never Married/Single
9. Is your family member currently, or will they be, living in Canada with a parent or legal guardian for their entire stay? - Yes
10. Is your family member travelling with a parent who does not have full legal custody of them? - Yes
11. What is your family member`s current immigration status in Canada? - Visitor
12. Do you want to submit an application for another family member? - Yes(계속 반복)
질문 대상자 공통질문입니다.
1. There are fees associated with your family member's application. Will you be paying your family member's fees, or is your family member fee exempt? - Yes, I will be paying my family member's application fees.
2. Are you giving someone access to your application? - No
3. In the past 10 years, have you given your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) for an application to come to Canada? - 주대상자에 대한 질문입니다. 당연히 Yes
4. There are fees associated with this application. Will you be paying your fees or are you fee exempt? - Yes, I will be paying my application fees.
5. Are you able to make a digital copy of your documents with a scanner or camera? - Yes
6.Will you be paying your application fees online? To pay online, you can use a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, China Union Pay) or a Visa Debit or Debit MasterCard. - Yes
4. IMM 문서 작성 하기
질문에 답하는 것은 캐나다에서 요구하는 공식적인 문서와 그에 대한 신청비를 계산하기 위함입니다.
결국 공식적인 문서(IMM-OOO)를 제출해야지만 신청이 완료됩니다. 가족 구성원마다 작성해야 하므로, 손품이 많이 필요합니다. 딱 하루 날 잡고, 작성하면 가능합니다. 그리고, 반드시 Acrobat PDF를 사용하셔야 작성이 가능합니다. 다른 것은 안되더라고요.

신청서를 쓰는 방법은 구글이나 유튜브에서 'how to complete IMM문서번호' 이런 식으로 검색하셔서 참고하시면 됩니다.
5. 공식 문서 및 기타 문서 업로드 하기
작성을 다 하셨으면, 각 카테고리별 첨부해야 할 창들이 나옵니다. 이때 공식문서(IMM)를 우선적으로 업로드하시고,
Client 카테고리에는 본인이 발급받고, 취합했던 각종 문서들을 하나의 pdf로 묶어서 업로드하시면 됩니다.
예를 들어, 개인 프로필에 관련된 것이라면, 여권 + 사진 + 영문 주민등록 +.., 학업 관련 카테고리라면 현재 학업증명서+대학교 졸업증명서를 묶어서, 올리시면 됩니다. 최대한 중복되지 않게요.
저는 제가 모았던 서류는 중복되지 않게 다 올렸습니다.
6. 최종 결과 및 후기
유학원을 통하지 않고 셀프로 이렇게 진행한다는 것이 많이 어렵고, 두렵고, 의심이 되는 것이 사실입니다.
저의 경우는 5월 말경에 신청해서 7월 말경에 주소지로 연장된 permit이 도착했으니, 거의 2개월 조금 넘어서 처리가 됐습니다. 캐나다 내에서 학생비자를 신청하면 며칠 정도 걸린다고 나오는데, 홈페이지에 나온 것보다는 더 기다리시면 될 듯합니다.(참고로 주소지가 캐나다가 아닌 경우는, 상당히 오래 걸립니다.)
주의할 점
제가 신청하면서 간과했던 것이, 제가 학생이니, 배우자 오픈 워크퍼밋도 받을 수 있었는데요, 위 질문에서 어떤 것을 신청하래?라는 질문이 맨 처음에 나옵니다. 그때 꼭 꼭, work permit 도 같이 신청할게라고 답하셔야 한꺼번에 처리됩니다.
저는 study permit과 visitor에 대한 기간 연장만 했기 때문에, 배우자 오픈 워크 퍼밋을 따로 신청했는데, 플래그 폴링(flagpoling)으로 아주 빠르게 발급받을 수 있는 방법을 알려드리겠습니다.
